TCP/IP Printing (LPR/LPD) Services

LPR/LPD is a platform-independent protocol for printing that runs over TCP/IP.

An LPD (Line Printer Daemon) service is run by Wasatch SoftRIP anytime you start SoftRIP's ImageNET network services. The PPD makes it possible to print directly to SoftRIP's hot folders from any Macintosh, UNIX, or Windows system on your network. (A number of alternative methods exist for Windows, making LPR/LPD a method of special interest for Macintosh and UNIX users.)

LPR stands for Line Printer Remote and refers to the program that sends jobs to the printer or print queue. This is often called the LPR client. LPR clients are available for all major operating systems, including Macintosh, where the client software is called a Desktop Printer.

The requirements for use of this protocol on Macintosh computers are (please see some important notes below):

Notes
-Applications running in Mac OSX Classic Mode are not supported, and should be used in their native Mac OS 9 operating enviroment.
-Macintosh OS v8.0 is not supported as Apple does not provide the Desktop Printer Utility for this operating system.
-Custom page sizes are not supported in Mac OS 10.3.1; we recommend updating to a later version of Mac OS 10.3
